When a winter storm takes out the power, the question is not just whether your generator will start. Do generators need transfer switches to run your property safely? If you want a generator to power hard-wired circuits such as your heating system, well pump, refrigerator or business equipment, the answer is generally yes. A properly selected transfer switch, or an approved panel interlock where permitted, is what keeps generator power separate from the utility supply.
