How to Prepare for Power Outages at Home
A winter storm, fallen branch or overloaded local grid can turn a normal evening into a cold, dark and disruptive one within minutes. Knowing how to prepare for power outages before the lights go out gives your household more than convenience - it gives you safer options, protects your property and reduces the pressure to make decisions in the dark.
For homeowners, property managers and business operators, the right plan starts with the systems that keep people safe: lighting, heat, communications, food, water and electrical equipment. A few practical preparations can make a short outage manageable and help prevent a longer outage from becoming an electrical emergency.
Start with a realistic outage plan
Do not assume every outage will last a few hours. In Southern New Hampshire and Northern Massachusetts, severe wind, ice and snow can affect roads, trees and utility infrastructure for days. Your plan should account for an overnight loss of power, limited travel and poor mobile signal.
Decide where everyone in the household will gather if the power fails after dark. Keep torches in known locations rather than relying on phone flashlights, which drain batteries quickly. Make sure children know where to find an adult, and check on neighbours who may rely on powered medical equipment, electric heat or refrigerated medication.
For a business or managed property, identify the equipment that cannot be allowed to fail. That may include sump pumps, fire alarm systems, security systems, refrigeration, server equipment, access controls or emergency lighting. Document who is responsible for contacting tenants, staff, the utility company and an electrical contractor if the outage affects the building.

Protect food, water and your home
When an outage begins, keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. A closed refrigerator generally holds a safe temperature for about four hours, while a full freezer can keep food frozen for roughly 48 hours if left unopened. The exact time depends on room temperature, how full the appliance is and how often the door is opened, so use caution when deciding what to keep.
If you have a well pump, remember that a power outage may also mean no running water. Fill clean containers, bath tubs or buckets before a forecast storm if appropriate. Drinking water should be stored separately from water intended for flushing toilets or basic cleaning.
Cold weather creates additional risks. Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls to allow warmer air to circulate around pipes. Letting a tap drip can help in some circumstances, but it is not a substitute for proper insulation or safe heating. If you leave the property during a prolonged winter outage, consider shutting off the water supply and following a winterisation plan to reduce the chance of burst pipes.
Sump pumps deserve special attention. If your cellar or lower level is prone to water intrusion, a power failure during heavy rain can create expensive damage quickly. How to prepare for power outages with backup power
A portable generator can run selected equipment, but it requires careful planning and strict safety practices. A standby generator can power a larger portion of the home or building automatically, but it needs professional sizing, installation and maintenance. The right choice depends on what you need to keep running, the fuel available, the electrical capacity of the property and your budget.
Portable generators should always operate outdoors, well away from doors, windows, vents and enclosed spaces. Carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless, and generator exhaust can be deadly. Never run a generator in a garage, basement, shed or under a partially enclosed porch.
Never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet. This dangerous practice, known as backfeeding, can energise utility lines and put utility workers, neighbours and your own electrical system at risk. It can also damage equipment when utility power returns.
A licensed electrician can install a transfer switch or interlock device that allows a portable generator to power selected circuits safely. Restore power carefully
