A burning smell at the consumer unit, sparks from an outlet, or a sudden loss of power in one part of a building is not a job to “keep an eye on”. Knowing how to handle electrical emergencies starts with recognising the risk, keeping people away from danger and getting qualified help without delay.

Electrical faults can develop quickly. What begins as a warm socket or a tripping breaker may point to damaged wiring, an overloaded circuit, moisture intrusion or failing equipment. The safest response is rarely complicated, but it does require calm decisions and a clear understanding of what not to touch.

First actions during an electrical emergency

If there is immediate danger, protect people before property. Do not investigate closely, remove covers or try to repair equipment yourself. Keep children, tenants, staff and visitors away from the affected area.

If it is safe to reach the main electrical panel without walking through water, smoke or a damaged area, switch off power at the main isolator. Do not touch the panel if it is hot, wet, visibly damaged or giving off smoke. In that situation, leave the building and contact emergency services and a licensed emergency electrician.

For a person who is receiving an electric shock, do not touch them while they are still in contact with the power source. Turn off the supply at the main isolator only if you can do so safely. If you cannot isolate the power, call emergency services immediately. Once the source is disconnected, seek urgent medical help even if the person appears well. Electrical injuries can cause internal damage and heart rhythm problems that are not always obvious.

When to evacuate rather than troubleshoot

Some electrical problems call for an immediate exit, not a closer look. Evacuate the property if you see smoke or flames from electrical equipment, smell persistent burning, hear loud crackling from a panel, or see arcing and sparking that continues after equipment is switched off.

Treat water around electrical equipment as a serious hazard. A flooded cellar, leaking roof, burst pipe or wet plant room can energise surfaces that look harmless. Stay clear of standing water where outlets, extension leads, appliances, machinery or electrical panels may be involved. Do not enter the area to move belongings or reset a breaker.

In a commercial or managed property, make sure occupants know which areas are off limits. A clear instruction to avoid a corridor, utility room, riser cupboard or affected suite can prevent a second incident while help is on the way. Property managers should also record the time of the incident, affected spaces and any relevant reports from tenants or staff, but only after the immediate safety steps are handled.

Signs that require urgent professional attention

Call a licensed electrician promptly when you notice any of the following, even if the problem seems to stop on its own:

  • A burning, fishy or hot plastic smell near outlets, switches, lights or panels.
  • Repeatedly tripping breakers or fuses that will not stay reset.
  • Buzzing, crackling, sparking or scorch marks around electrical equipment.
  • An outlet, plug, switch plate or electrical panel that feels unusually warm.
  • Lights that flicker or dim across the building, especially when larger equipment starts.

A tripped breaker is doing its job by interrupting a fault. Resetting it once may be reasonable after unplugging recently connected appliances, provided there are no signs of heat, damage or water. If it trips again, leave it off. Repeated resets can allow a damaged circuit or appliance to overheat.

How to handle electrical emergencies involving fire

Never use water on an electrical fire. Water conducts electricity and can increase the danger to anyone nearby. If the fire is small, contained and you have the correct extinguisher for electrical fires, use it only if you have a safe escape route and the fire is not spreading. If there is any doubt, evacuate and call emergency services.

Once you are outside, do not re-enter to retrieve possessions, turn off individual appliances or check whether the fire has gone out. The source of the fault may still be live, and smoke can become hazardous very quickly.

After an electrical fire or smoke event, the affected wiring and equipment should be inspected before power is restored. Replacing a burned outlet alone may not address the underlying cause. The fault could be in the circuit wiring, a loose connection, an overloaded panel or damaged equipment upstream.

Power outages: what is safe to check

Not every power loss is an internal electrical emergency. First, look outside from a safe location. If neighbouring properties and street lighting are also out, the issue may be with the utility supply. Contact the network provider and avoid approaching downed lines, damaged service cables or trees resting on wires.

If only your building has lost power, check whether the main breaker or residual-current device has tripped. Do this only if the panel is dry, cool and shows no signs of damage. Switch off or unplug appliances on the affected circuit before resetting it once. If power returns and holds, reconnect appliances one at a time. If the protective device trips again, stop and arrange a professional inspection.

For businesses, factories and multi-unit properties, avoid restarting all equipment at once after an outage. Large motors, refrigeration equipment, HVAC systems and sensitive electronics may need a staged restart. This reduces electrical demand and helps identify a circuit that is not operating correctly. Critical equipment should follow an established shutdown and restart procedure where one is in place.

Protecting people around damaged equipment

Do not use an appliance with a damaged cable, loose plug, burning smell or intermittent power. Unplug it only if the plug and outlet are cool, dry and safe to touch. Otherwise, isolate the circuit at the panel if it can be done safely, and leave the equipment alone for an electrician to assess.

Extension leads deserve the same caution. A lead run under rugs, through doorways or across wet areas can overheat or become damaged without being noticed. Do not tape over a split cable or rely on a loose outlet until a convenient time. Temporary fixes often become permanent risks.

Outdoor electrical problems require extra care. Keep clear of damaged garden lighting, pool equipment, external outlets and service cables, particularly after storms. If a vehicle has struck a utility pole or electrical service, stay back and call emergency services. Even apparently intact wires can be energised.

What to tell the emergency electrician

Clear information helps a qualified electrician arrive prepared and focus on the right area. Explain what happened, when it started, whether there was smoke, heat, water or a shock, and what circuits or equipment were affected. Mention recent work such as renovations, new appliances, generator operation, plumbing leaks or storm damage.

Do not minimise the symptoms because the issue has temporarily stopped. Intermittent faults are often harder to trace, and details such as a buzzing sound before a breaker tripped can make diagnosis faster and safer. If you can do so without getting close to danger, note the label of the affected breaker and take a photograph of visible damage from a safe distance.

A professional response should include finding the cause, not simply restoring power. Depending on the issue, that may mean repairing a failed connection, replacing damaged wiring, correcting an overloaded circuit, upgrading an outdated panel or inspecting the system for heat-related faults. Prevent the next emergency before it starts

Many electrical emergencies give warning signs.
